We are pleased to announce our first two opportunities for SDC Members through the new SDCF Guest Artist Initiative Program:

Through this program, SDCF facilitates hiring professional SDC Member Directors and Choreographers for Guest Artist positions at colleges and universities across the country.  In addition, SDCF provides matching funds for the Guest Artist fee for 2 productions each year.   Before applying, see IMPORTANT NOTES below opportunities.

Arizona State University School of Theatre and Film is thrilled to be the inaugural recipient of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Guest Artist Award.   We seek a stage director with a strong physical theatre background to direct Big Love by Charles Mee, opening November 5, 2010.  Rehearsals begin on or around September 27.  Design meetings and initial casting will take place in April.  The roles of Lydia and Olympia are pre-cast as MFA thesis projects; the remaining cast will be drawn from both the undergraduate and graduate student body.   Graduate student actors have trained in Viewpoints, Suzuki, and Fitzmaurice techniques, so familiarity with these methods is preferred.  Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with student designers and within tight budget parameters is also preferred.

The maximum rehearsal week is 32 hours, usually 6 - 11pm Monday through Friday and 7 hours either Saturday or Sunday.  Many directors opt for a shorter timeframe during the week (usually 6:30-10:30) to accommodate student schedules.  In the week before opening, there is a 10 out of 12 tech and an 8 out of 10 tech dress on the weekend, with Monday off.

The ASU School of Theatre and Film production policy and procedure manual is online.  http://theatrefilm.asu.edu/students/prodmanual/ASUPPPManual.pdf

Application deadline is February 24 (date of receipt; not postmark date) with commitment required by April 1.  $8000 fee (which includes $4000 in matching funds from SDCF), plus housing and 3 round-trip airfares from domestic point of origin, and standard SDC Pension and Health.

To be considered for this Guest Artist position at ASU, please submit:

  1. Letter of interest addressing this specific project
  2. Resume or CV
  3. Names and contact information of three references

Our second opportunity through the Guest Artist Program is in Manhattan at Fordham University.

Directing fee for this project will be $3500 with standard SDC Pension and Health.  To apply for this Guest Artist position, please submit

WANT YOUR SCHOOL TO APPLY FOR THE GUEST ARTIST INITIATIVE PROGRAM?
Our next application cycle for schools will open after March 1, 2010 with a deadline of May 1, 2010.  Proposals will be accepted for college and university productions through 2011.  To be considered for funding, projects must not have a director or choreographer attached; part of the Guest Artist Initiative Program is to assist schools in finding a professional director or choreographer.  It is important to note that SDCF facilitates the hiring; the selected school makes ALL hiring decisions.  Check back for guidelines and application form after March 1, 2010.
