We Stand in Mourning and Solidarity-Black Lives Matter

Stage Directors and Choreographers Society grieves with our Black colleagues and with Black communities across our nation. We stand together with you, in mourning, in outrage, in solidarity: Black lives matter.

George Floyd should be alive right now. Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor should be alive right now. Theirs are tragically only the most recent lives to be lost in acts of murderous, racist violence. Their deaths offer testimony to the fact that racism and white supremacy are alive and well in America. The pandemic now gripping our country is taking more Black lives than any others, exposing in equally stark terms the ways racism harms Black communities and corrupts our healthcare system and economy. These systems of supremacy are deep, entrenched, and reinforced by cultural narratives that pervade American society. They harm us all.

As storytellers and citizens, the choices we make will either uphold or help to dismantle the gross injustices that have been laid bare by the events of this week. While in this moment we are prevented from doing so in the ways we know best – in the gathering of community – we encourage all of our Members to take action, and we share here below some of the ways that you can.

SDC will not stand for or tolerate racism in any form. We will stand with our Members and our collaborators in the fight for justice.
